Logistic Racks for 3PL and E-commerce: Faster Picking in Less Space
In a fulfilment warehouse, the rack is not just storage — it is the route every order takes. The right logistic rack layout cuts walking time, reduces picking errors and lets you take on new clients without moving premises. Here is how 3PLs and e-commerce sellers in Singapore get the most from carton-pick racking.
Why most fulfilment warehouses pick from shelving, not pallets
E-commerce orders are small: one to five items, picked by hand. Storing those SKUs on pallets in pallet racking means a forklift to bring stock down and a lot of wasted vertical space. Medium-duty longspan shelving puts each SKU in its own location at hand height. Our warehouse rack — 400kg per level, 200cm or 245cm spans — is built for exactly this.
Slot by velocity: the 80/20 rule
In most operations, around a fifth of SKUs generate most of the picks. Find yours from three months of order data, then:
- put the fastest movers in the golden zone — between knee and shoulder height — on the bays closest to packing;
- put medium movers further along the run or one level up;
- put slow movers, bulk stock and replenishment cartons on the top levels and far ends.
Re-slot every quarter. Seasonal products and promotions change the order profile quickly. Boltless racks make re-slotting easy, because levels can be re-spaced in minutes.
Give every location an address
A location code such as A-07-3 (aisle A, bay 7, level 3) on every beam front is the foundation of accurate picking. Your WMS or even a spreadsheet can then tell pickers exactly where to go, and new staff are productive on day one.
Aisles: the hidden cost
For trolley picking, around 100–120cm between facing racks works well. Where a pallet jack delivers replenishment, allow about 180cm or more at turning points. Main aisles and routes to fire exits should stay wider and completely clear. Our guide to commercial racking layout planning shows how to draw this.
Use the clear height
Industrial units in Singapore often have generous ceiling heights. A 240cm frame adds a level for overflow in the same floor area, which is often the cheapest storage expansion available — no extra rent, just an extra beam and shelf.
Plan for growth and for moving
3PL contracts change and leases end. Boltless racks dismantle without tools and re-install at the next site, and extra bays simply join onto the end of a run. Plan runs with space to extend, and keep a record of your configuration so it can be rebuilt quickly.
Packing and returns areas
Do not forget the packing bench. Lighter boltless racks at 40–50cm deep are ideal behind packing stations for cartons, tape, void fill and labels, and for a separate returns-processing zone.
